Optoma's golf simulator guide gives the GT2400HDR a height to throw ratio of 0.88:1, meaning the throw distance is a little less than the height of the image.

Smart Fit is Optoma's camera based screen alignment, run from the Optoma Smart Control app on your phone. Optoma describes it this way: Smart Fit uses your smartphone's camera to detect the screen frame and automatically correct the image alignment, significantly reducing installation effort. You mount the GT2400HDR, open the app, point your phone at the impact screen, and the projector squares the picture to the frame.

What it adjusts, and what it does not

Smart Fit is geometry correction. It reshapes the edges of the picture so they land on the screen; it does not change the size of the picture the lens throws. The GT2400HDR has a fixed 0.496:1 lens with no zoom or lens shift, so the image size is set by how far the projector sits from the screen. If the projector is mounted a little too far back and the image overshoots the screen, Smart Fit and four corner correction can pull the edges in to fit. If it is mounted too close and the image falls short of the screen edges, no alignment tool makes the picture bigger; the projector has to move back. Get the mounting distance right first, then let Smart Fit do the fine alignment.

The other alignment tools in the app

  • Smart Move: Optoma says Smart Move automatically detects obstacles using the camera and repositions the projection to a clear, unobstructed area.
  • Horizontal and vertical keystone: corrects the trapezoid shape you get when the projector is angled to the screen, using a slide dial in the app.
  • Four corner adjustment: tap and drag any corner of the image to reshape the frame in real time, which is the tool for a screen that is not perfectly square to the projector.

The Optoma Smart Control app

Optoma's app for iOS and Android handles setup, alignment and day to day control: power on and off, input switching, image settings and geometry correction, so you are not reaching for the remote between shots. Optoma also uses the app to deliver its Golf Sim picture mode, which it describes as purpose built display tuning for third party golf simulation software such as GSPro.
