Are Cheap Golf Simulators Worth the Investment

Are Cheap Golf Simulators Worth the Investment? Our Take

Golf simulators can range dramatically in price, from budget DIY builds under $1,000 to lavish installations costing well over $50,000. This leaves many golfers wondering – are cheap golf simulators actually worth buying? Should you save up instead until you can shell out big dollars for top-end performance?

We decided to find out by constructing a Garage Golf Simulator using the most affordable components available. Our goal was building a basic virtual golf environment focused purely on maximizing value.

After logging hours of practice time swinging away in our budget simulator, we have verdicts on what corners can be cut and what areas demand proper investment for long-term enjoyment. Here are the key lessons we learned:

Mat Quality Matters

The first temptation when minimizing simulator costs is going ultra-cheap on the hitting mat. But forego quality mat construction at your own peril. Rock-bottom foam mats lack sufficient density and shock absorption for preserving your body and clubs.

We initially tried using a basic $150.00 driving range mat. While fine for occasional use, the minimal cushioning and traction soon took its toll through joint pain and stubbed shots.

Upgrading to the SIGPRO SOFTY GOLF MAT for $899 made a huge difference in playability and protection. The multi-layered foam absorbs impact, while the reinforced turf provides stability through the swing. This mat can easily handle high volume use without wearing down.

So don’t abandon all budget-principles, but do invest in a performance-grade hitting mat built for marathon simulator sessions. Your body and scores will thank you.

DIY Screen and Enclosure Options Can Work in a Pinch

One area you can save money in a cheap simulator is using DIY screen solutions rather than buying higher end retail impact screens. The screen is perhaps one of the most critical components of a golf simulator setup, as it directly impacts the visual and playing experience. The ideal material for a DIY Garage Golf Simulator screen should possess durability, display quality, and safety features to stop a fast-moving golf ball. Here are the most commonly used materials:

      • Polyester Golf Impact Screens: These screens are specifically designed to withstand the impact of golf balls. They offer excellent durability and provide a good balance between image quality and impact resistance.

      • Nylon Nets: While not providing the same level of image quality as polyester screens, nylon nets are an affordable option that can effectively stop golf balls. They're ideal for those more concerned with functionality than high-definition visuals.

      • Canvas Tarps: Heavy-duty canvas tarps can be used for a more rugged DIY approach. While they absorb impact well, their image quality is inferior to polyester screens and they are considerably more noisy.

        Frame Construction:
The frame supports your screen and can be made from various materials such as PVC pipes, aluminum, or wood. The choice depends on your budget, tools, and the space available.

        • PVC Pipe Frames: Lightweight and easy to assemble, PVC frames are perfect for those seeking a portable and affordable option.

        • Wooden Frames: A wooden frame offers more stability and durability than PVC and can be a great choice if the simulator will not be moved frequently.

        • Metal Conduit Frames: For those looking for a more permanent setup, aluminum frames provide durability and professional appearance but at a higher cost.

Building a DIY screen for your golf simulator can be a rewarding project that enhances your golfing experience without breaking the bank. With the right materials, tools, and a bit of elbow grease, you can create a high-quality setup that rivals commercial options. Remember, the key to a successful DIY golf simulator screen lies in meticulous planning, quality materials, and regular maintenance. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a newcomer to the sport, a DIY screen offers the perfect blend of functionality, affordability, and satisfaction.

For our temporary budget setup we experimented using both a basic white canvas tarp and a wrinkle-resistant polyester projector screen material from Amazon for under $150. For our frame material we went with PVC pipe frames to keep the setup light and cost effective.

For the screen options, while image quality understandably can’t match ultra-high-end screens, both DIY options provided a playable surface at a fraction of the cost. The white canvas tarp was rugged but very loud during our testing and honestly did not hold up well over time to repeated shots. Overall the polyester screen did hold up well from initial testing, although there was considerably more bounceback than from our testing with other high end simulator screens such as the SIGPRO Premium Screen from The Indoor Golf Shop.

Overall the frame made of PVC also held up well but would move from time to time during our testing. Ideally the overall best DIY option for a frame would be 1” EMT Conduit or thicker for a more secure setup. Make sure to protect yourself by properly padding or covering the poles in the event of a direct shot.

      Simulator Software Needs Investment

The biggest mistake we see from ultra-cheap golf simulator builders is neglecting to budget for proper simulator software. Many assume built in golf software only for the launch monitor will suffice for practicing their golf shots. While this is true, you will inevitably want the ability to play real golf courses.

Investing $300-$600 in a leading package like E6 Connect or $250.00 for an annual subscription to GSPro provides infinitely more replayability through photorealistic graphics, performance analysis tools and extensive multiplayer options. These software options unlock the full potential of your simulator.

Don’t Skimp on a Launch Monitor

The final component where it pays to spend more is choosing a golf launch monitor. Cheaper radar-based models under $1,000 often carry accuracy limitations, especially for critical data like spin rates, carry distance, ball speed and quality of strike.

Saving up for a launch monitor like the SkyTrak or Skytrak+ launch monitor, the former of which has been recently priced reduced to $1495.00, really optimizes the feedback quality available from simulator training through tour-caliber measurement sensitivity.

While launch monitors are not necessarily essential, they provide value breakthrough insights and feedback. Try allocating more budget here if performance data matters.

      The Bottom Line

Building an ultra-budget golf simulator inevitably requires some compromises on components like mats, screens and software. But through strategic cuts and smart allocation of budget to the most crucial elements like launch monitors, golfers can still construct a polished simulator setup at an affordable price.

The majority of golfers will find that cheap simulator configurations can ultimately still provide reliable functionality. However, understanding certain upgrades, particularly on performance equipment, can elevate the experience over time when budget allows.
